First ever cataract operations performed at MMH

Over the last three days, the first ever cataract operations at Mulanje Mission Hospital have taken place. This is the culmination of two years of hard work by the team at MMH, who have built a new eye clinic from scratch. Theatre staff in Mulanje received training from their counterparts at Zomba Central Hospital In preparation for this, staff from Mulanje visited Zomba Central Hospital last month and received training from the eye team there, assisting and taking part in operations. Rehabilitation Unit now open at Mulanje Mission Hospital

The rehabilitation unit at MMH has opened last month and is now providing care to both children and adults suffering from a range of conditions, such as stroke, burns and amputations. Sight 2020 Direct’s Sally Feyi-Waboso is working alongside Eunice, a newly appointed rehab technician with a diploma in medical rehabilitation, to provide daily outpatient clinics. Sight 2020 Direct are pleased to announce that we have now established a formal partnership with Mulanje Mission Hospital. We have agreed a memorandum of understanding, which outlines the ways in which our organisations will work together to provide good quality ophthalmology and rehabilitation services for the people of Mulanje. Andrew and Sally head off to Malawi

Andrew and Sally Feyi-Waboso have safely arrived in Malawi, bringing suitcases full of donated supplies with them! This includes surgical equipment and implants for glaucoma and cataract operations, which we hope to be performing in Mulanje next year. There is currently a fuel crisis in Malawi, so they have not yet been able to deliver the equipment to Mulanje Mission Hospital, but they are planning to make the trip next week and meet up with Dr Arie Glas to discuss the ongoing plans for the eye clinic. Fundraising concert by Aber Valley Male Voice Choir

On Friday 21 October, the Aber Valley Male Voice Choir are singing at a concert organised by Friends of St German's church, Adamstown, Cardiff in support of Sight 2020 Direct. The choir was founded in 1959 and have performed across the UK at venues such as the Royal Albert Hall, York Minster and the Principality stadium. They have also toured internationally and have recently returned from a tour of Cyprus. Livingston survived a late scare to secure a win against Nottingham Forest in a hotly contested blind football match at St Montfort School. Referee Thokozani Kanyong'o oversaw the pre-match warm up and ensured that the players, wearing kits kindly donated by their respective clubs, were given blindfolds to eliminate any advantage that they may have had from being partially sighted.
